Ananta Captain: who is the protagonist and what we know

The Captain is the playable protagonist of Ananta: the leader of a special task force of the ACD (Anti-Chaos Directorate) who has just arrived in Nova City^[1]. The official Japanese name is キャプテン and the Chinese name is 队长^[1][2]. Here is what NetEase and the press have shown, and what is still open.

Who is the Captain in Ananta?

The official website presents the Captain as the head of an ACD special task force newly arrived in Nova City^[1]. The Steam page sums up the premise in four words, "Go Viral. Save the World": in Nova City, the Captain becomes an internet influencer, and an in-game social network called Scope is part of that loop^[5][1]. Chongxiao, the second city, is described on the official site as the player's home town, reached by plane^[1].

The Captain is not alone. Ananta lets you switch between several characters, each with a story of their own, and the developers told TechRadar that a character you are not controlling "continues to live their own life"^[6]. What has been shown of the Captain?

Most of what we know comes from trailers and hands-on previews. According to Inven Global, which played the Gamescom 2026 demo, and to PC Gamer, the Captain uses free-flow melee combat built on light attacks, heavy attacks, guard and dodge, with color-coded enemy attacks to read^[4][3]. The Captain's tentacle-like appendages serve both in fights and to swing between buildings^[1][4]. In the demo, skills ran on cooldowns of around five seconds, and firearms and shooting from vehicles are also present^[4][3].

The Steam page also lists the roles the game puts you in: task-force captain, but also cop, hacker, delivery person and live-streamer^[5].

Is there a male or a female Captain?

Both a male and a female version of the Captain have been shown over the game's history^[1][3]. PC Gamer notes that the female Captain has disappeared from recent marketing, which fuels discussion among players, but also that she has not been confirmed as removed^[3]. NetEase has made no official statement on the subject. Until it does, the status of the female Captain is not yet announced, and we will not guess.

What is not yet confirmed about the Captain?

• Whether the female Captain will be available at launch on January 15, 2027^[1].
• The Captain's full move set, beyond what the demos have shown.
• Any official French, Spanish, German or Portuguese name for the character: none has been published.
• The final launch roster of playable characters around the Captain.
